This is a career bio for a detective at the Los Angeles Police Department.

William Bustos, Detective III

Bill Bustos has been with the Los Angeles Police Department since 1986. Currently, he is the Officer in Charge of Valley Traffic Detectives. Holding the rank of Detective III, he oversees other detective supervisors in the Valley Traffic Division and runs the day to day business of the office of about 30 officers and civilians.

Bustos began his specialization in traffic in 1988 when he learned Collision Investigation at Central Traffic Division. Over the course of his career, he has also worked Hollenbeck and Harbor Patrol, Management Services, and Internal Affairs Advocate Section. His favorite stints, though, were in Vice and Narcotics where he engaged in drug busts in Central Bureau and reducing prostitution in the Van Nuys area.

Detective Bustos has been a Sergeant I and a Sergeant II during his time with the Department but like many supervisors, his fondest memories look back toward his days as an undercover investigator patrol cop. That's where he had the most fun on the job.

Though there's less chance of being injured or killed in his current assignment, he still enjoys many thrills that come his way. He is a media spokesperson for the Department when traffic issues make the news in the San Fernando Valley. And his fluency in Spanish makes him one of the first traffic experts sought out by the Hispanic news media.
